First Class Education
Marleigh Primary Academy is a 420 place school at the development, with a 52 place nursery. Part of the Anglian Learning multi-academy trust, it will have a particular focus on STEM subjects - science, technology, engineering and mathematics - reflecting Cambridge's strength in these areas.
The innovation design provides generous interior classrooms set around a shared learning area, with extensive facilities for sports and outdoor learning, including a multi-sports all-weather pitch, green spaces, a vegetable garden and woodland area. Arts will also play a key role in the curriculum to support children's cognitive skills and excitement for learning.
The new school and nursery will offer an outstanding environment both indoors and outdoors to excite and engage children in their learning.
Of the lessons taught at the school, what would be your favourite to learn?
We’ve very much enjoyed starting to use our new set of VR headsets. They would have awed me as a child as they do with our children today! They have been especially useful in science lessons, with older children using them to gain a better understanding of the circulatory system and heart, and our Key Stage 1 class have been using them to experience various forest landscapes as part of their learning about plants.
What are the focus lessons at Marleigh Primary Academy?
Although our curriculum is broad and balanced, we have a strong STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) thread running through it. That means giving children opportunities to apply their learning in maths and science to problem solving and real-life scenarios. We have a separate space called the Sir Michael Marshall STEM Room designed for flexible use including cooking, robotics and construction and are making plans to work closely with Marshall and other engineering businesses locally.
As a new school, have you had many parents apply to the school who also live within the Marleigh development?
Anglian Learning Trust’s vision for the academy included being able to offer school places for all children moving into Marleigh. That’s why we’ve opened for all children from Nursery to Year 6 (3–11-year-olds). We currently have 44 children on roll and this is growing every week as more families move into their new homes at Marleigh. We’re also able to offer wraparound care from 8am to 6pm, which many working parents are finding crucial.
What exciting things do you have coming up at school with the children for the winter term?
We’re making lots of exciting contacts with local organisations such as Cambridge United FC and ARM, who will be able to enrich our curriculum with visits and activities. We’re looking forward to providing a range of extra-curricular clubs for the children, such as coding, ballet, STEM and sports clubs. We are planning an author visit as part of National Authors’ Day and have various trips planned for music and sporting events, so there is plenty to look forward to!
